Banco Popular becomes an affiliate member of UN Tourism


Barcelona, ​​Spain. The Dominican Popular Bank became an affiliate member of the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism)an incorporation that will increase the competitiveness and strategic support that the banking entity offers to the development of tourism in the Dominican Republic.

The entry of Banco Popular into this United Nations agency, responsible for the promotion of tourism worldwide, was approved by the Committee on Issues Relating to the Collective of Affiliated Members, during the 121st executive session of the Executive Council, this Tuesday, June 11, in the city of Barcelona, ​​Spain.

The announcement was led by Messrs. Anabel Bueno Santana-Dolenc, permanent representative of the Dominican Mission to UN Tourism, and Zurab Pololikashvili, secretary general of UN Tourism.

Also present were Natalia Bayona, executive director of UN Tourism; Ion Vilcu, director of the Affiliate Members Department; and Juan Manuel Martín de Oliva, vice president of the Popular Tourism Business Area, as well as representatives of other government entities, including Carlos Peguero, vice minister of the Ministry of Tourism.

UN Tourism currently has more than 500 affiliated members from public and private entities.

Greater support for tourism

As an affiliate of UN Tourism, Banco Popular will be able to more actively support the national and international tourism sector, and take advantage of the resources offered by the organization, such as its exclusive platform to facilitate communication and cooperation with member states and other affiliates; access to studies, statistical data and more than 1,100 tourism publications, and the ability to share relevant information to promote knowledge and development in the field of tourism and help solve its current and future challenges.

In his assessment of the incorporation of Popular as an affiliate of this UN organization, the executive president of the financial entity, Mr. Christopher Paniagua, said that “this is a historic moment, because we will enhance our contribution more effectively to the sustainable development of the tourism in the Dominican Republic”.

International support

This new integration adds to the recognition that the Secretary General of UN Tourism, Mr. Pololikashvili, made in Madrid, during the January 2023 edition of FITUR, when he valued the constant contribution of Popular for more than three decades to Dominican tourism, highlighting that the financial organization is “a great example” for other banks.
